Shantiniketan or Santiniketan is a small town near Bolpur in Birbhum district, West Bengal, India, approximately 165 km from Kolkata. It was founded by Maharshi Devendranath Tagore, & later expanded by his son Rabindranath Tagore whose vision became what is now a university town, Visva-Bharati University.

History Of Santiniketan:
Santiniketan was before called Bhubandanga (after Bhuban Mohan Sinha, the Zamindar of Raipur in WB), & was wound by the Sinha family. In 1862, Maharshi Debendranath Tagore, while on a visit to Raipur, indicate interest in land near Birbhum. There was only one building there namely 'Santiniketan'. Which is still there nearby the Upasana Mandir known as 'Odisha Bhawan'. Maharshi liked the place & registered it in the name of Maharshi Devendranath against Rupee One as a token value. He called his home Santiniketan. Santiniketan turned into a spiritual centre where people from all religions were invited to join for meditation & prayers. He founded an ashram here in 1863 & became the initiator of the Brahmo Samaj. Here Rabindranath Tagore began Patha Bhavana, the school of his thoughts, whose focal reason was that learning in a regular habitat would be increasingly charming and productive. After he got a Nobel Prize in 1913, the school was ventured into a college, known as Vishva Bharti University, in 1921. In the year 1924 based on the same ideology & with the intention of educating & training the people belonging to deprived part of the society, he founded Siksha Satra with only 7 students. The journey Started by Kabiguru to kickstart the education system transformation gradually turned into a reality when the institution was recognised as the first university to be recognised in the year 1951 by the central government.
Basanta Utsab In Santiniketan:
Basanta Utsav generally means the ‘celebration of spring’. Falgun & Chaitra according to the Bengali calendar is the season of Dol Utsav/ Holi. During this season nature shows its own beauty with colourful flowers of Palash, Shimul, Chatim etc. The beautiful tradition of celebrating spring festival in Bengal was first started by Rabindranath Tagore at Visva-Bharati, Santiniketan, W.B. Festivals add colours to life. And, if it’s Dol/Holi, the fiesta of colours, one may well imagine how it smudges every soul with happiness. The famous Indian poet Rabindranath Tagore introduced Basant Utsav or Spring festival in Santiniketan, Bolpur, Birbhum to recreate the magic of Dol/Holi.

History of the Basanta Utsav:
Rabindranath Tagore established the Visva-Bharati University in Santiniketan. The serene &  tranquil town is nestled in the Birbhum district, West Bengal. Being no exception to the ethereal charm of Dol/Holi, he decided to add a new dimension to the festivities. Thus, he came up with a plan to celebrate the festival in this way. Also known as ‘Dol Jatra’ or the ‘Dol Utsav’, the fiesta enjoys the repute as the “Rabindrik Basanta Utsav”. Today "Basanta Utsav" at Santiniketan isn't just a Visva-Bharati University's program or a neighbourhood program, rather a fabulous celebration.
