History and Culture of Purulia :-
Purulia is one of the oldest districts in West Bengal and has a rich culture and heritage to boast of.
 According to the Jaina Bhagavati-Sutra, the place existed as early as 5th century and was one of the 16 Mahajanapadas of its time. It is believed that Purulia was a part of the country known as Vajra-bhumi, in ancient times. However, apart from this, very little is known about the pre-historic era of Purulia.
Purulia has a rich cultural heritage. It has a mixed culture of Bengal, Jharkhand, and Orrisa as it was a part of these areas for various times. From archaeological evidence to local festivals, every cultural event has got a tribal touch in it, which is the specialty of Purulia.

FESTIVALS & CULTURE OF PURULIYA :
1.    Chhau Dance:- Purulia is the birthplace of Chhau dance. There are three subgenres of the dance, based on its places of origin and development, Seraikella Chhau, Mayurbhanj Chhau, and Purulia Chhau.
2.    TUSU  PARAB :- Makar Sankranti is an important festival in all parts of Bengal.
3.    BHADU PARAB :- Bhadu Parab is held from mid-August to mid-September. It is a very common festival of the villagers of Purulia. People believe that worshipping Bhadu Devi enables childless women to bear children and for this belief, the women sing Bhadu songs and worship.
4.    BANDHNA PARAB :-   Bandhna Parab is also a local festival in Purulia which is held every year after the Kali Puja. This festival or parab is famous among the Kurmi, Bhumij, Korha, Lodha communities.

It is a popular place for young mountaineers to learn the basic course in rock climbing. There are three routes available to reach Ajodhya Hill. Via Jhalda, via Sirkabad, and via Baghmundi.
